Terrain Biennial: Bethany Cordero: Leaning Into Time: Deliberate Entanglements

Leaning into Time: Deliberate Entanglements" is a sculptural weaving that imagines a cross-temporal dialogue with "Deliberate Entanglements", the groundbreaking 1971 UCLA exhibition that marked a pivotal moment in the convergence of fiber and sculpture. I’ve encountered powerful works in person by artists such as Magdalena Abakanowicz, Claire Zeisler, and Sheila Hicks, but my experience of that particular exhibition is limited to black-and-white documentation—opening up a space for imaginative engagement rather than direct reference.

The work I have made for the 2025 Terrain Biennial is not a recreation of any piece from that show, but rather a speculative offering: a sculptural gesture toward the work I might have contributed, had I been able to participate. In this way, the piece leans into time—not just as a theme, but as a method of connection by reaching across decades to engage with the lineage of material experimentation. Combining welded steel, sisal, textiles, thread and lacquer, the structure weaves in and out of itself, revealing traces, absences, and echoes.

Imagining and creating a piece for an exhibition that took place over 50 years ago becomes a type of intergenerational conversing—an acknowledgment of the enduring interconnectedness between artists across time. It mirrors the spirit of this Biennial, which seeks to bridge communities through public art, dissolving boundaries and making creative expression more accessible, shared, and inclusive across generations.
